Marking and signage
Well-marked paths and a clearly signposted network of trails help with orientation:
On the Sauerland-Höhenflug, hiking signs are located at all intersections where several hiking trails meet. These provide information about a short- and long-distance destination on the Höhenflug, along with the respective distance in kilometers. They also provide information about the exact location with UTM coordinates, the altitude of the location, and the hiking trails leading off to the left and right.
The Sauerland-Höhenflug trail is also regularly marked for safe hiking. These markings are constantly monitored by rangers from the State Office for Forestry and Timber in North Rhine-Westphalia and the Sauerland Mountain Association, and are reinforced as needed. Safe marking and signage are an important criterion for certification as a quality trail in Germany.
The most important landmarks on the Sauerland-Höhenflug are:
- The white H on a yellow background marks the Sauerland-Höhenflug main trail
- The white H on a blue background marks a Sauerland high-altitude flight circular route
- The white H on a black background marks the Sauerland-Höhenflug access route
In an emergency, you need to act quickly! That's why the Sauerland-Höhenflug is equipped with rescue signs throughout. The green and white plaques, attached to the signposts, contain a number that you must provide when making your emergency call. This lets rescuers know exactly where you are, saving valuable time.
