The Schwalenburg Ringwall Trail invites you to a unique bridge between history and landscape. In direct contact with nature, a circular route leads you through one of the most impressive large castles of the early Middle Ages. Based on its construction, it was built around the year 800 and abandoned before the turn of the millennium. A total of eight information panels provide interesting and fascinating information about the castle.
Spanning approximately 6 hectares, the Schwalenburg is one of the exceptionally large castles of the early Middle Ages. The complex consists of three interlocking fortification rings, the result of several expansion phases. The fortification rings are preserved in the area as earthworks. They cover the remains of the former massive dry-stone walls.
The Schwalenburg is one of the Sauerland's soulful places, its history is entitled "Eternally transient".

Directions
The best way to reach Schwalenburg Castle is from the Willingen district of Schwalefeld. From the main road opposite the cemetery, a paved field path leads up to the hikers' car park at Hegeberg. From here, it is only a few hundred meters to the ring wall complex. The total walking distance from the hikers' car park in the town center to the observation tower is 100 km. You can also reach Schwalenburg Castle via the certified quality hiking trail "Uplandsteig" from the directionWillingen or Rattlar.
