The 63 km long Diemelsteig quality hiking trail opens up the entire holiday region Diemelsee. Access is possible from all towns along the route.

For years, the holiday region Diemelsee known for holidays and relaxation, water sports and Hiking.

The 63 km long Diemelsteig is a rewarding yet challenging hiking trail. Starting at the parking lot on Kirchstraße in Heringhausen, the Diemelsteig leads via Rhenegge to Adorf, then via Wirmighausen, Flechtdorf, and Schweinsbühl to Deisfeld. Continuing through Hemmighausen, the Diemelsteig runs for a short distance alongside the Uplandsteig to Ottlar, before returning "on its own" to Heringhausen.

With a largely natural route amidst a distinctive low mountain landscape, the trail offers magnificent views, steep climbs, panoramic landscapes, meadows, and fields in a constant alternation. The well-marked trail, including continuous kilometer markings, allows the trail to be hiked with or without a map.

Directions

Diemelseer Hotel at the exit of Heringhausen. You cross the L 3078 and after a few meters you reach the entrance at the hiking car park “Florenbicke”. This is followed by the ascent to the secret highlight of the Diemelsteig: the St. Muffert cliff with its shelter almost at the highest point of the mountain (592 m). An incomparable panoramic view of both ends of the lake is worth the arduous climb. You cross the Eisenberg. Pass the historical boundary stones of the Principality of Waldeck (FW) and leave the forest in the direction of Rhenegge. D km 5 to 10 Beautiful view of Padberg with its monastery. The path leads past meadows and fields to the women's bike path with a shelter. This invites you to linger and offers a wonderful view of Adorf with its windmills. Now follow the field path down to the Rhene. This small stream used to feed the “Little Mill,” whose wheel can still be seen today at the “Hofmeister” restaurant in Adorf. Continue along the mill ditch to the Rhenegger Mill, where electricity is still generated today with a water turbine. The path leads over a bridge along the L3076 towards the “Christiane” visitor mine. Upwards past the exit of the “Pferdestollen” mine, the Diemelsteig leads to a small wooded area. D km 10 to 15 Turn left at the edge of the forest and follow the path towards Martenberg. In front of the Martenberg Cliff, known worldwide in geological circles as the “Rosenschlösschen” and “Adorfer Stufe” formations, the trail leads down to Adorf. For the next two kilometers you will be accompanied by the “Bicke”, a small stream that rises in Wirmighausen. D km 15 to 20 Walk along the donkey path on the edge of the village to the main road, cross the K74 and leave Wirmighausen in the direction of Lenkenberg. Passing meadows and fields over the Lenkenberg to the edge of the forest, after a short turn right you go left again to the Stunzenberg parallel and above the Aartalstraße in the forest. At kilometer 18,5 the path turns at a right angle towards Eichenlied. D km 20 to 25 At kilometer 20, cross the K74 and then walk towards Kalkrose. Coming out of the forest, a magnificent view opens up of the village of Flechtdorf with its two-towered pillar basilica. After 500m of the county road you reach the village of Flechtdorf. Continue to the church. At the cemetery the path turns right towards Halsberg. Passing forest edges, fields and meadows, the path loops through the forest, slightly ascending to the “bridgehead”. D km 25 to 30 On the relatively flat high-altitude trail (600m above sea level) you can enjoy the wonderful forest landscape of the low mountain range. At kilometer 29,5 you leave the closed forest area below the “Widdehagen”. Shortly before kilometer 30 you reach a shelter that invites you to linger near the source of the Rhene. D km 30 to 35 For a short stretch the path leads over the K68, straight ahead to the small forest. Once you have crossed this, the view opens up to the town of Schweinsbühl. In a small loop you leave the outskirts of Schweinsbühl, crossing the K 67. On the high trail past the “Winterscheid” turn left. At kilometer 33 the path turns right and runs approx. 800m straight through the forest. The path winds downhill to the Hamesbeutel, circles around it and continues steeply downhill to the center of Deisfeld. D km 35 to 40 After a small loop in the village, the path leads approx. 2 km along the Diemel to the Speier Mill. After a few meters you will reach Hemmighausen, where the Diemelsteig meets the Uplandsteig in the town center and from here they continue together. The common path between Ölkesberg and Dietrichsberg now leads uphill to the refuge at Niegelscheid. D km 40 to 45 A wonderful view of theDiemelsee invites you to take a short break. The landscape now offers magnificent views, the scenery is predominantly characterized by meadows and fields. Follow the path uphill to kilometre mark 43, shortly after which you cross county road 63 and follow the signs on a tarmac road to the Dommelhöfe (635 m above sea level). Once you reach the farms, you should simply leave the path and walk up to the Dommelturm (726 m above sea level). This detour is rewarded with a unique panoramic view into the Sauerland and the Waldecker Land rewarded. At this point, the Diemel and Uplandsteig trails also separate. D km 45 to 50: Amidst the magnificent mixed and spruce forest, you hike to the refuge at the "Wiggenknochen." The landscape of the low mountain range presents itself here at its most beautiful. The trail turns right towards Stormbruch. Above the village, it leads past meadows and fields. After km 48, you cross the road to Bontkirchen and after several hundred meters you reach a wooded area. The trail now leads through spruce and mixed forest above the Diemelsees (Itter inlet) and offers beautiful views of the reservoir and nature reserve at several points. D km 50 to 54 Coming out of the forest, the Diemelsee from its Hessian bathing side. Downhill to the riverside path near the campsites, you reach the Great Eschen side. Through the beech forest and the nature reserve of the Diemelsee-Itter arm will be the end point of the Diemelsees. Here you cross the Diemelsee-Randstraße (L3393) and hikes along the Diemelsteig trail up into the deciduous forest above Kotthausen. The entire hiking trail to the "Am Fresenberg" weekend cottages offers beautiful views of the 3,2 km long Itter arm. Above the weekend cottages, the trail leads through the deciduous forest to the Helminghausen hiking car park and then continues towards the dam. A zigzag path near the dam takes you to the power plant, crosses a small bridge above the stilling basin, and hikes along the Diemel River to the small dam. From here, the climb begins at an altitude of 341 m above sea level over the pond, offering impressive views of the power plant building and the dam. After climbing 253 m above sea level on the trail to the summit of the Eisenberg at 595 m above sea level, the view sweeps over the lake and the many mountains of the (Hessian) Upland and the North Rhine-Westphalian Sauerland. D km 60 to 63 From the Eisenberg summit, the highest mountain in the town of Marsberg, the hike leads through the beech forest, past historic state border markers, and down to the turning point of the Diemelsteig trail at an altitude of 590 m above sea level. From there, the trail returns to the starting point at the Florenbicke hiking car park.
