Medebacher Mountain Trail

Wherever possible, we have applied red stickers with this cross; in open countryside, we have sometimes preferred paint and brushes, where you will find white crosses on a black background.

The Medebach Mountain Trail starts and ends in the town center of Medebach. From there, we head south on an approximately 3 km valley hike to the small hamlet of Berge. Along the way, we already have our first beautiful view of Medebach and the Medebach Basin. The trail continues dreamily between two rows of hedges, leading you over the Lückenkopf hill towards Dreislar. Enjoy the magnificent panoramic views in all directions from the Lückenkopf summit (479 m). The Medebach Mountain Trail then leads over the Opolt hill with its summit cross to Dreislar, where a visit to the Barite Museum is highly recommended.

The route descends to Medelon. A challenging stage awaits you on the way to Küstelberg, with almost 400 meters of elevation gain. The steepest climb is the ascent to the Rösberg summit at 781 meters. However, you will be rewarded upon arrival with a breathtaking view of the Winterberg plateau. The remaining 3 kilometers to Küstelberg offer a relaxing end to this stage.

The Medebach Mountain Trail now leads you through the villages of Deifeld, Referinghausen, Titmaringhausen, Düdinghausen, and Oberschledorn. Along this section, you'll be treated to a multitude of breathtaking views from the trail's highest points: Kahler Pön and Ka-Lied are just a couple of examples. Learn about the "Lower Hairpin Bend" of the former Steinhelle-Medebach narrow-gauge railway from an information panel, walk a section of the old Heidenstraße (Heath Road), or admire the oldest half-timbered house in the Medebach area – the historic Fresenhof. Further along the trail through the Ussel Heath, the Ussel Cross offers a panoramic view of the Hessian Highlands.
On the last section of the mountain trail from Oberschledorn to Medebach, you will cover approximately 10 km before reaching your starting point of the hike – the Weddelsee in Medebach.

For the 66 km long quality trail of the "Wanderbares Deutschland" initiative of the German Hiking Association, strict attention was paid to ensuring a high level of quality in terms of marking, signage and variety in the route.

• Plan your stage according to your fitness level and abilities. Take sufficient breaks and pace yourself.
• Dress appropriately for a hike. Wear weather-appropriate and durable clothing that protects against rain, cold, sun, and heat.
• Appropriate footwear is essential for hiking the Medebach mountain trail. Sandals, flip-flops, or sneakers are unsuitable. The shoes must have good, grippy treads. The forest can be very slippery after rain. In autumn, fallen leaves can obscure loose stones, roots, or uneven terrain.
• Hikers appreciate natural paths and trails. However, this also requires appropriate attention!
• Should an emergency situation arise, you will find green and white signs at intersections. These signs display the emergency number and a specific identification number; a combination of letters and numbers (UTM system). This combination indicates your location and helps the emergency services pinpoint your location.

Current information about our forests - The bark beetle and its consequences

Forest owners are working diligently to implement the necessary measures in the forests and remove the damaged timber. However, due to the scale of the damage, this work cannot be completed quickly. Clearing and reforesting the affected areas will therefore take a considerable amount of time and may lead to disruptions such as closures and detours. This should always be taken into account when visiting the forests.

We therefore appeal to everyone who cares about the forest:

• Please understand that extensive forestry work is necessary in the current situation and that this will currently affect your forest experience.
• Be especially careful during your leisure activities and observe all applicable notices and any prohibitions.
