A piece of hunting history!

Following the gaze of the red deer in the game reserve, you will hike through two nature reserves and gain insights into the hunting passion of the Hessian-Darmstadt landgraves and into the historical coppicing of the Lindenhardt.

The Lindenhardt tour leads through the extensive forest areas of the EderberglandThe area, formerly known for its abundant game, particularly its red deer population, is situated directly on the path. The Kleudelburg forester's lodge, built in 1884, stands nearby. Of the former hunting lodge, erected in 1722 by Landgrave Ernst Ludwig of Hesse-Darmstadt, only the well and a barrel-vaulted game cellar remain. The path owes its name, however, to a 469-meter-high hilltop, now covered with stately beech and oak trees, which until the 1950s was a 65-hectare coppice woodland.

Directions

Start your tour at the hiking portal near the wildlife enclosure. You will soon reach the valley of the "Sausebach" (Rushing Stream). A staircase leads down over mossy ground into the Riedgraben valley. A romantic, natural forest edge path takes you along the Riedgraben through the nature reserve. Interesting rock outcrops can be discovered along the path below the natural stream and on the hillside. After a final view of the lively Riedgraben stream, the hiking trail turns sharply left and climbs steadily uphill for some time. Upon reaching the plateau, you will discover the Kleudelburg forester's lodge in a large forest clearing. A hunting lodge once stood here, built in 1722 by Landgrave Ernst Ludwig of Hesse-Darmstadt. The extensive forest areas of the EderberglandThey were known for their abundance of game, especially their red deer population. Today, the forester's lodge, built in 1884, stands here. Only the well and a game cellar with a barrel vault remain of the hunting lodge. From here, a forest path leads north along the Lindenhardt. The Lindenhardt is a 469-meter-high hilltop, now covered with stately beech and oak trees, but until the 1950s it was a 65-hectare coppice woodland complex. Along moss-covered slopes, the path leads past the "Stern" crossroads to the "Hirschstein" (Deer Stone). Shortly after, the path turns right into the tall deciduous forest. On narrow and winding forest paths, it descends steeply in switchbacks through dense oak and beech woodland into the Eder Valley. This section was called the "Brandweinpfädchen" (Brandy Path), because tanning bark was once extracted from the oak bark, and the workers in the forest were supplied with brandy for motivation. The trail leads back to the Riedgraben ditch along a romantic forest path with a dense canopy of leaves. After crossing the main road, the Lindenhardt tour continues through the Ederaue nature reserve, directly alongside the Eder River, one of Hesse's cleanest rivers. At Auhammer near Battenberg lies the Ederknie nature reserve, which protects a largely untouched section of the Eder with gravel banks and floodplain areas, as well as the adjacent semi-dry grasslands. Crisscrossing fields, meadows, and bushes, you reach the village entrance of Dodenau. After crossing the village road, the trail leads over a ridge through open fields with magnificent views. From the rest area, the view extends beyond Dodenau, across the Eder to the Eisenberg mountain and the paragliding airfield, as well as to the village of Hatzfeld/Reddighausen. Following secluded forest paths across the Dodenau Heath, the trail returns to the hiking portal at the wildlife enclosure.
