Hard on the edge!

The hiking portal at the Rennertehausen sports grounds is the starting point of the premium tour. You can get in the mood for the hike by passing the Rennertehausen Mill, which has been there since 1584, and through the Eder floodplains.

You'll reach the Ederstede, a meter-high sandstone cliff directly on the Eder River. The reddish rocks of the Ederstede cliffs were formed approximately 255 million years ago during the Zechstein period and consist of deposits from premature rivers. The terrain of the Ederstede, however, only developed during the Ice Ages, which began approximately 2,5 million years ago. During these times, the Eder cut into the valley, creating a steep drop. Following a path along the top of the slope, you'll experience just how steep this slope is and can gaze down at the Eder River.

A historic boundary stone from 1650 stands along the trail. For three hundred years, the border between the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt and Hesse-Kassel ran here. The trail leads along this historic border in a side valley up into the forest. The forest area includes areas with old beech stands and areas where young forest is developing. At the end of the forest area, you reach the Rhine-Weser watershed and enjoy a magnificent view of the Ederbergland.

The path leads once again to the upper edge of the Stede. Along the path, you'll once again experience the unique landscape with its steep slope and the Eder River flowing below. At the end of the path, you'll rejoin the cliff path and return to the hiking portal.
