Directions
Let's go! First, we follow the red squirrel, which leads us from the starting point through the beautiful Strycktal Valley. We roll past the impressive Mühlenkopfschanze – the largest ski jump in the world! And always along the babbling Itterbach stream, which accompanies us on gentle paths toward Hochheide.
At the end of the valley, the only long climb of the tour awaits – up to the state border between Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia. Those who reach the top are rewarded with magnificent views and fresh mountain air! Here, we follow the old border stones to the right to the small mountain hut "Zum Streit."
- Now things get exciting: At this point the path splits.
- The red squirrel tour turns here.
- We follow the black squirrel – so keep going straight ahead!
We dive into the Green Trails – child-friendly, flowing bike park trails with gentle curves, bumps, and small berms. The first section is a gentle downhill – really fun, but never too difficult!
Then it continues briefly along a gravel path—perfect for taking a breather—before the next climb to the "Große Grube" (Great Pit). It's worth taking a short break here: At a reconstructed historic charcoal kiln, you'll learn how charcoal was once made for iron processing—a little glimpse into history!
One last uphill – and we are already on the Ettelsberg, Willingen's local mountain. A whole world of experiences awaits you at the top:
- Landscape playground
- Mountain lake
- Hochheide Tower with panoramic views
- Adventure trails with “Linne” and “Raupe Rike”
- And if you're hungry: Siggi's Hut – but only recommended during the week with children!
We roll back down the Green Trail into the valley – flowing, playful, and full of little fun moments. But be careful: children need breaks even on the downhill! It's good that you keep crossing small paths where you can stop for a moment and take a breather.
