The Extratour H9 connects Breuna and the Kugelsburg in Volkmarsen  with the Hoher Steiger. Forest trails and magnificent views await. In spring, the scent of woodruff in the Wittmarwald forest and the blossoming juniper heath on the Hoher Steiger are impressive.

The extra tour can be hiked from either the Breuna or Kugelsburg entry points. The panoramic views of the Warburg Börde and the history of the Hoher Steiger give the tour a special charm.

This charming hiking tour leads through a landscape that captivates with its rapid changes of meadow valleys, forests, viewpoints, dry grasslands, fields, and valuable nature reserves. Starting at the Breuna entrance, after crossing the A44 motorway, the recommended hiking direction is counterclockwise to the right. This allows for a stop at the Restaurant "Zur Kugelsburg" below the Kugelsburg in the last third of the hike (after about 6 km) and rewarded with a fantastic view of the half-timbered town Volkmarsen.

Near the Breuna entrance there is a shelter where you can end your extra tour.

Natural history:
FFH area Wittmarwald, forest nature trail, dry grassland, former limestone quarry

Fairytale
Kugelsburg, Scharfer Stein, Hoher Steiger

Sights:
The town centre of Breuna is charming with its watering hole and historical path.
We also recommend a visit to the nearby castle swimming pool (open-air pool – 0,6 km) or the “Sauerbrunnen” healing spring (1,7 km), where you can taste fresh spring water and a leisure complex with an adventure playground, mini golf and water treading pool offers leisure entertainment.

Directions

The tour leads at the foot of the Steiger mountain at mid-elevation through an intoxicating mixed forest. Highlights in spring are the fragrance and the sea of white blossoms of wild garlic. !!Caution: After a break at the Steigerhütte, you reach the entrance to the forest nature trail. A signpost pointing in three directions may be confusing, as there is also a shortcut back to the starting parking lot. Please continue straight down the mountain and then shortly right into the field to reach the Esseberg hill towards Kugelsburg. Emerging from the forest there, the trail continues over to the Kugelsburg hill, which you will circle on its north side. Upon reaching the "Eselsweg" (Donkey Trail), a detour to the "Scharfer Stein" natural monument is worthwhile, a bizarre rock formed by prehistoric sea lilies, also known as trochite limestone. The town's landmark Volkmarsen is the Kugelsburg Castle. Despite its turbulent history, some parts of the castle have survived to this day. From the former keep, a panoramic view opens up far into the Waldecker Land, the Warburg Börde and the Habichtswald Nature Park. Returning through the fields, the "Hohe Steiger" can be climbed. The path up through the "Rhödaer Holz" is lined with beech and pine trees. An educational trail informs about the special features of the forest. Where pines once grew, there is now a magnificent view back to the Volkmarser Kugelsburg and into the Waldecker LandSpecies-rich grasslands have developed on the forest-free areas. They provide habitat for numerous insects that feast on the colorful blossoms. Sheep graze the grasslands, preserving them as a valuable nature reserve.
