This circular trail provides information about ore mining and gold production between the 11th and 15th centuries.

The geological history of Eimelrod begins approximately 400 million years ago, when the region lay beneath the ocean. When two continental plates collided, the ocean sediments folded into a mountain range, today's Rhenish Slate Mountains. Gold was deposited in these rock layers through chemical reactions 320 million years ago. Over the course of millions of years, the gold-bearing rock layers were eroded by weathering and carried away by streams and rivers. The gold contained in the rock was dissolved and enriched in the sediment of the flowing waters as "placer gold." It can still be found leached out today in favorable locations.

In Eimelrod, many relics of medieval mining can still be seen today. Gold was mined here, and iron, copper, manganese, and barite were also mined in the surrounding area. Collapsed tunnel entrances and shafts, spoil heaps, pits, and the former Heinrichstollen tunnel can be seen.

Directions

Along a total distance of 7,5 km, eight stations inform you about the gold deposits around Eimelrod, their formation over the course of geological history, and their mining since the Middle Ages. Please plan approximately three hours for a walk. From the sports field, the trail continues past the Mühlenbach stream and around the Mühlenberg hill. The trail passes the disused "Heinrich-Stollen" mine, the Eimelrod nature trail, and other tunnels and pits, before returning to Eimelrod. A total elevation gain of 3 meters is required.
