The wall represents both protection and danger. At the foot of the dam rises a 36-meter-high wall of quarry stone.

Rubble stone masonry demands exceptional craftsmanship: each stone has its own unique shape, each needs its own precise placement and matching neighbors. Despite the angular and irregular pieces, the wall must be stable and form a smooth surface – a skill mastered by only a few.

The dam of the DiemelseeIt was created using this demanding technique. The diabase needed for it, which hardly weathers, was quarried in the immediate vicinity.
Construction began in 1912; 90 experienced stonemasons from Italy and Serbia were recruited for the project. War and financial difficulties delayed the project – the wall was not completed until 1924.
