- Start: Wading pool, 35066 Frankenberg - Schreufa
- Destination: circular hiking trail
Start your walk clockwise. After just a few meters, the path turns right, with the Nienze River babbling beside you. Not far from here, you'll reach the Shepherd's Beech (1). This is where the shepherd used to graze his sheep. He himself found the ideal place to rest and shelter from the sun and rain under this magnificent tree.
Next, cross the road leading to Hommershausen. Can you see the young beech trees on the left and right of the path, forming a natural canopy (2)? A bench invites you to relax and enjoy.
You'll soon reach the Hommershäuser Heide, which unfolds a symphony of violet colors in late summer. This valuable natural monument is traditionally cared for with sheep, grazing once or twice a year.
The trail climbs toward Schmitteberg. Once at the top, you'll be rewarded with a magnificent view.
The trail continues toward Hommershausen, a small forest village in the Philipp Soldan town of Frankenberg (Eder).
Almost at the end of the trail, there are two absolute highlights. The trail now leads you to the Weather Museum, which has much to offer even outside of opening hours: For example, a phenological clock, a climate memorial fence, and a weather and climate garden with numerous information panels explaining climate change and weather patterns (www.wettermuseum-alte-schule-schreufa.de).
Now we continue towards Nuhne - perhaps you will see the famous Nuhne geese here!
Now it gets challenging. Over five large boulders, you reach the other bank of the Nuhne. After crossing the meadows and passing the Mühlgraben lock, you return to the starting point. If you're hesitant about the path over the boulders, or if the water level in the Nuhne is too high, follow the signposted alternative route through the village, which also returns you to the starting point.
Back at the hiking entrance, there is a rest area with a wading pool directly in front of you, ideal for cooling tired feet and taking a moment to reflect on what you have seen and experienced.
