Bike tour Trekkingpark Sauerland

The route on the first day takes us through the Hochsauerland region, past the Mühlenkopfschanze ski jump, where the annual World Cup ski jumping takes place, into the Hoher Pön hiking area. We leave Hesse and cycle through the small village of Titmaringhausen. From the valley floor, we follow beautiful forest paths to Küstelberg and through the Orketal valley to Winterberg. From here, we gravel the Ruhr Cycle Path to Niedersfeld, then wind our way to the "Neuer Hagen" nature reserve. Over the Langenberg, we reach our first recommended trekking spot, "U4" Ritzhagen near Willingen".

On the second day we have to plan a bit more kilometers, so we start in the morning, maybe buy some provisions in Willingen and then we set off. We warm up gently to Brilon Wald, before taking on our first climb. The next stop is the Borbeck Chapel, located on the mountain of the same name and also part of an early medieval rampart. With little elevation gain, we continue through the villages of Petersberg, Brilon, and Messinghausen to Helminghausen, a village at the foot of the Diemel Dam. To reach our next trekking spot, we'll have to climb. A wonderful serpentine path made of asphalt and gravel leads us to the platform "D1) St. Muffert near Heringhausen" high above the Diemelsee.

On the third day, we head over the Dommel into the Upland. A detour to the Dommel Tower is worthwhile; from here, you can take a look back at the route you've just completed and the route ahead from above. Above Eimelrod lies another overnight stop, "U2) Bockelau near Eimelrod," overlooking the gold vein of the Sauerland.

On the fourth day, the route leads over the small Bömighäuser Lake to Welleringhausen, where one of the oldest churches in the Upland is located. Our next or final overnight destination is "U3) Büller Höhe near Usseln," close to the Milky Way and the spiritual retreat of the Hengböhl quarry. The purpose of this overnight stay is to ensure that you can return home rested the next day by car or arrive on time for your train connection. From Usseln, the destination of our beautiful tour, it is only a few kilometers via the Diemelquelle to Willingen.   

Recommended equipment includes sufficient drinking water, a tent and guy lines, food, toilet paper, rainproof clothing (functional and weather-appropriate), a backpack, a first-aid kit, a pump, a puncture repair kit, and a multi-tool. The minimum practical rim width is 24 mm for 2,25" tires or 28 mm for 2,4" tires. Tires with tread are recommended, and tire pressure should be low (6 to 7 bar). The route mainly runs on paved gravel roads and asphalt farm tracks, but there are also some technical sections every now and then that require some riding skills in wet conditions.
