Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of historical copper mining on the Bergwerk circular route 2 in the idyllic Snow White village of Bergfreiheit. The 4,5 km long circular route starts at the Bergwerk hiking car park and leads you through a varied landscape characterized by nature trails and relics of mining. The mining of copper ore began here as early as 1552, which had a lasting impact on the region.
Right at the start of your hike, you can delve into the tunnels of the visitor mine at the hiking car park and learn all about the mining history of the region. The path takes you through picturesque nature and past old tunnel entrances that remind you of the heyday of mining. You cross the Urff twice, whose water power once contributed to pre-industrial development.
A special highlight awaits you after the second crossing: the "Kleine Leuchte" quarry with its impressive siliceous slate fold, which provides a glimpse into the earth's history. Numerous benches and seating areas along the path invite you to take a leisurely break and enjoy nature.
The "Kellerwald Jewels" are characterized by their scenic forest trails and breathtaking views. These carefully selected routes range in length from approximately 4,5 km to almost 15 km. If you enjoyed this hike, feel free to discover other gems of the Kellerwald and Edersee region.
