U1 Schwalenburg trekking site near Schwalefeld
The "Schwalenburg" trekking site is located a little way from the ring wall complex. A magnificent view of the Aar Valley and the surrounding region at sunrise is well worth the effort. There's also a shelter here in addition to the trekking site.

The Schwalenburg: This prehistoric hill fort with three rings of ramparts likely dates from the late 8th to 10th centuries. The fortification encompasses an area of six hectares and is one of the most impressive prehistoric fortifications in Central Europe. The complex has a diameter of 300 meters and approximately 1700 meters of ring walls.
Our tip: Visit the Schwalenburg Castle's ring wall and the small observation tower. Incidentally, this is one of the five Sauerland "soul places" (Sauerland Seelenorte). Learn more at www.sauerland-seelenorte.de.
