Cyrill Trail Willingen

Tracking the elemental forces of Storm Kyrill

A nature trail has been created on the 838 m high Ettelsberg, where the effects of the storm in January 2007 are clearly visible. Nothing has been changed in this approximately one-hectare area since the hurricane; nature has been left to its own devices. The spruce trees lie exactly as Kyrill left them, some snapped, most torn from the ground with their roots intact. Individual trunks stretch into the air, some have splintered off several meters above the ground, others were hit further down. The natural path winds its way through this chaos. You can stand beneath enormous root plates, walk around fallen trees, and when the going gets too rough, small bridges and wooden steps over the trunks and roots help you get over them. From a small viewing platform, you can get an overview of this bizarre natural spectacle.

The Kyrill Trail is not only a destination for hikers and visitors; kindergarten groups and school classes also embark on an educational expedition. Sturdy footwear is a must when exploring the nature trail!
The path has already changed significantly over the years and this process will continue, providing interesting insights into the formation of a new biotope: the bark peels off the trees, the soil falls off the root plates, new vegetation grows and the dead wood provides a new habitat for small animals.
