Hatzfeld (Eder) Castle Ruins

Castle

Across the Eder, the Lords of Hatzfeldt built a castle, first mentioned in 1213. The castle hill and its ruins are still owned by the Hatzfeldt family.

Hatzfeldt Castle began to decay as early as the 16th century and, according to an inventory, was already partially deserted by 1570. A small part was still inhabited in 1707.

The castle hill and its ruins are still owned by the von Hatzfeldt family. It is owned by Count Sebastian von Hatzfeldt. Over the past 30 years, the Hatzfeld Castle and Local History Association has maintained the ruins, cleaning, renovating, and securing damaged masonry. Garment clasps, clay figurines, and vessels discovered during the restoration work still bear witness to life in the medieval fortification.
