Bergfreiheit visitor mine
The heyday of mining in Bergfreiheit lasted just under 50 years: from 1552 to 1590. Later attempts to restart mining all failed due to a lack of profitability. And yet there are still numerous testimonies from this period in and around the town that continue to shape the landscape and character of the village to this day.
In 1974, part of the existing tunnel system was opened, which had previously been developed by an association through voluntary work. In 1982 the visitor mine was expanded through the development of the lower level.
Tours of the mine are always a special experience for families with children.
If you want to get to the bottom of the mining history of the village, it is worth visiting the small “Historical Mining Office” museum in the village, a half-timbered building worth seeing with numerous exhibits and documents on ore mining.
A cultural and historical educational trail, which starts and ends from the hiking car park directly at the mine, traces the traces of the former mining industry.

In general, the “AST-Taxi” (CallSammelTaxi) should also be included in the planning. With the CallSammelTaxis (AST), the NVV ensures mobility on routes that are not in great demand. Instead of taking the bus, you can travel here in normal taxis or rental cars. AST also have fixed timetables - you just have to register your wish to travel by telephone (usually) up to 30 minutes before the journey. Also remember that AST only run when there are no normal buses running at the same time.
