Threshold noise

"Threshold noise" describes a state of in-betweenness, describes what characterizes the exhibits of the exhibition by the artist Anna Charlotte Frevel with the participation of the artist Maximilian Dörbecker:

Painting, sculptural elements, installations, and time-based works enter into a dialogue, creating a structure in which digital, material, and biological processes overlap; generated image structures are transformed into painting, material-based works develop from open, partially uncontrollable processes, and algorithmically generated formations are translated into space as fragments; works that are part of an ongoing process in which analog and digital methods, material dynamics, and conceptual considerations mutually permeate each other.

The exhibition by the artist living in Münster is being shown for the first time in KorbachThe Wolfgang Bonhage Museum presents works from different contexts in a joint presentation, in order to make their common questions tangible in a spatial constellation. 

Across various media – painting, sculpture, installation, and time-based works – Anna Charlotte Frevel's practice is united by a common interest in form as a process-oriented, relational structure. Regardless of the specific material or medium, the works emerge from situations in which different systems collide.

In painting, this manifests itself in the superimposition of digitally generated pictorial spaces and material processes, in which meanings shift and become obscured. In the sculptural works with Maximilian Dörbecker, the material itself becomes the formative element, its behavior not only considered but actively permitted. This logic is also extended to algorithmic processes in Anna Charlotte Frevel's works, where form appears as an emergent result of relational dynamics.

Anna Charlotte Frevel is a graduate of the Münster Academy of Fine Arts and developed an artistic research project on generative growth processes at the AI ​​Lab of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in 2024–25. Her work encompasses painting, installation, sculpture, and algorithmic image and form generation. At its core is the investigation of form as a result of dynamic interactions between biological, material, and technological systems. The artist's work has been supported in various ways through grants and funding projects in recent years. She has presented her art in more than 30 exhibitions over the past 10 years, including in Munich, Hamburg, Potsdam, Mannheim, Essen, Brussels, Los Angeles, Seoul, and Treviso.
