Philipp-Soldan, the sculptor of the Reformation
At the beginning of the 16th century, significant events led to a surge in construction activity in Frankenberg. First, the town fire of 1476 necessitated the rebuilding of private houses and public buildings. Then, the originally Catholic Church of Our Lady had to be converted into a Protestant church due to the introduction of the Reformation. The sculptor and woodcutter Philipp Soldan lived in his hometown of Frankenberg at this time and worked as a sought-after craftsman for the town and the parish, as well as for the local nobility and the Landgrave's family.
In the anniversary year of the Homberg Synod, we remember Ruth Piro-Klein In her lecture, she discussed the life and work of this important artist, who had been forgotten for four centuries after his death. It was only the research of Ludwig Bickell in the late 19th century and Albrecht Kippenberger in the early 20th century that brought "Master Lipsen zum Frankenberg" back into focus.
