An ancient custom is also observed in the Upland region: On Easter Sunday (in Schwalefeld and Neerdar on Holy Saturday), Easter bonfires are lit in all parts of the village after nightfall. Placed in prominent locations high above the villages, they shine brightly and are visible from afar, piercing the darkness.
The tradition of the Easter bonfire blends pagan and religious rituals. Even in ancient times, fires were lit in spring to drive away winter and evil spirits. Fire was believed to have a purifying effect. The ashes were scattered on the fields or kept in the house, in the hope of growth, fertility, and protection from evil forces.
Later, the custom was incorporated into Christian practices. Evidence of the continuation of Germanic spring fires can be found in a letter from Pope Zachary to Boniface in 751. In many regions, a fire was lit and blessed in front of the church during the Easter Vigil, from which the Easter candle was then lit. The spark jumping to the wood is considered a symbol of the Resurrection, and the burning candle represents the light of Jesus Christ in the world. Evidence of the established tradition of Easter fires exists from the 15th century onward, although it is not always clear whether they have ecclesiastical or secular origins.
