Maypole raising

Traditional Fest

Traditional popular event

On May 1st, the members of the Usseln Young Men's Club erect a maypole in the village center. This traditional festival has been a fixed part of the club's program for years and is very popular with both the young men and visitors. The maypole is raised step by step by the members using long pitchforks.

This happens in several individual stages and is a physically demanding task. Beforehand, however, the many carved wooden coats of arms of the various Usseln clubs, along with their corresponding shield holders, are attached to the tree trunk. A beautiful and impressive decoration. Likewise, a specially wrapped wreath of fir branches is fastened high up the trunk with chains. Then the tree is ready to be erected.

Meanwhile, the numerous visitors and guests are well catered for: sausages and steaks are available to satisfy hunger, along with alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. A waffle stand, run by the girlfriends of the Usseln lads, is also on site. Here, one can enjoy a leisurely cup of coffee and one of the delicious waffles. The festivities are accompanied by lively brass band music and the infamous wood-sawing competition.
