The other way of moving

Stand Up Paddling - SUP

Where does “stand up paddling” come from?

Stand-up paddling can be traced back to several origins. Polynesian fishermen off Tahiti moved across the sea in their canoes, paddling while standing. One-man bamboo rafts are also used in Asia, where paddles are used in addition to poles while standing. Then, in the 20th century, surf instructors in Hawaii used stand-up paddling as a comfortable means of transportation, using a paddle to get from shore to the wave-breaking reefs and back faster with their surfboards. The elevated position on the board also gave the instructor a better overview of the surfing students.

Since the 2000s, stand-up paddling has developed as a distinct sport, independent of wind and waves, and has become increasingly popular as a recreational activity. It has evolved into a water sport with its own technique and distinct competitions. Stand-up paddling is easy for everyone to learn and offers addictive fun. On particularly sturdy and stable beginner boards, even parents and children can paddle together.

surfing

Am Edersee You can choose between different spots depending on the wind direction. Bringhausen Due to its large bay and light, consistent winds, it is the ideal spot for beginners. But ambitious, experienced Surfer get their money's worth here! However, with westerly or easterly winds, the Waldeck Basin, which takes up most of the Edersee, is preferred. The basin is surrounded by high mountains, so the wind blows straight through it, thereby intensifying the wind. Because of this, some surfers like to compare the Edersee to the thermal area of Lake Garda.

With its changing winds, the Edersee demands a lot from both surfers and sailors and is therefore a challenging regatta area where tactics play a crucial role.

At the Edersee you can learn more about windsurfing at the windsurfing school Windsurfing Edersee learn to surf and for beginners the ca. 6 ha large bathing lake of the Teichmann Camping and Holiday Park offers excellent opportunities to learn the “first steps” in windsurfing (information at Tel. 05635 / 245).

Also the Diemelsee and the Twistesee offer good surfing opportunities.

Water-skiing

The Waldecker Land offers you a fantastic backdrop for optimal leisure fun. The waterski carousel at Twistesee, near the residential city Bad Arolsen, attracts beginners and professionals in the summer and also the Edersee offers water skiers a separate water skiing area!
Pure contact with the water… if that doesn’t sound tempting!
