Hiking responsibly

Please be considerate of the environment

In fields and forests, communities of plants and animals exist in a biological balance intended by nature. Red deer are among the most sensitive animals in our forests. They react sensitively to disturbances and depend on peace and quiet. Due to the coexistence of wildlife and humans, such as forest workers, hunters, and forest visitors such as recreational hikers, horseback riders, and athletes (joggers, Nordic walkers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, etc.), red deer, which are normally active during the day, have become increasingly active at dusk and at night. As a result of this, and due to reductions in hunting, forest visitors rarely see them anymore.

Please observe the following rules all year round:

  • Plan your time and route so that you are not traveling at dusk or even in the dark

  • Do not leave the paths

  • Dogs must be kept on a leash

  • Do not damage anything or leave any waste behind

  • Such consideration helps all animals in the forest and fields, especially during the early summer breeding season for game and the breeding season for birds.

  • Fairness should be a given!

The German Hiking Association has published a brochure "Tips for hikers’ correct behavior towards (wild) animals" to avoid problems that may arise from the encounter between humans and animals.
