Castles

Im Waldecker Land There are many castles and palaces, we present the four largest of them.

  1. The barocke Residence Palace in Bad Arolsen, which was built after the Versailles model, is now considered the city's landmark.
  2. Castle Friedrichstein cannot be overlooked, as it is situated on a mountain high above the beautiful spa town Bad Wildungen.
  3. The Edersee is enthroned by the Waldeck Castle - the landmark of the Edersee region. From here, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Edersee.
  4. The outskirts of Volkmarsen situated Kugelsburg is an old castle ruin with a climbable tower and a viewing platform.

Churches & Monasteries

In addition to the secular fortifications of the Middle Ages, there were also 12 monasteries in the Waldecker LandThese and the churches created the intellectual, cultural, and economic foundations of clerical rule, and even today, monasteries and churches bear witness to this glorious past.

Of tourist interest are the monastery Haina, as one of the best-preserved examples of Cistercian Gothic architecture in Germany, the first Waldeck monastery founded in Netze, with the Netzer Altar as one of the most important examples of German panel painting and the former Cistercian monastery in Frankenberg.
